Millennium II "Green" Home Receives an Application of GYP-SPAN® Radiant Underlayment by Hacker Industries, Inc.
Newport Beach, CA - April 30, 2001: Illinois' first health house, a showcase home designed to educate construction professionals and homeowners about healthy green living, received an application of GYP-SPAN® Radiant, donated by Hacker Industries, Inc., over the radiant heating floor system on March 23, 2001. Gypsum Floor Systems, a Goshen, Indiana based Licensed Applicator of Hacker Industries, Inc., poured 6,400 square feet of the gypsum concrete floor underlayment on the main floor of the 10,000 square foot residence.
How does GYP-SPAN® Radiant contribute to this design emphasis on energy efficiency? Formulated specifically for use over hot water tubes or electric cables, GYP-SPAN® Radiant adheres to the tubes or cables without air pockets and seals the room perimeter without shrinkage cracks, allowing for even distribution of heat without hot spots or wasted energy. GYP-SPAN® Radiant is formulated with a heat inhibitor, providing an excellent thermal mass and compressive strengths up to 2500 PSI, for a firm, flat floor ready for the installation of finished floor goods.
The primary ingredient of GYP-SPAN® Radiant is gypsum, a rock that occurs naturally and abundantly in many parts of the world. Because of the natural origin of gypsum, GYP-SPAN® Radiant meets several of the criteria for defining a "green" product. Gypsum is easily mined utilizing relatively little energy compared to other forms of mining and milling for construction products.. Gypsum is found in toothpaste, beer, tofu and aspirin, to name a few products safe for human consumption. GYP-SPAN® Radiant is also inorganic so it is not conducive to the growth of mold, nor does it circulate dust and pollens into the air, polluting the indoor environment as a forced air heating system does. GYP-SPAN® Radiant is the ideal choice for a radiant heating system that is environmentally and energy conscious.
The Millennium II home located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, will meet the criteria set forth by the American Lung Association of Minnesota for building healthier, more energy efficient homes. The American Lung Association created this national education program, the Health House project, to raise the standards for better indoor environments. The home will also feature state of the art design trends and advanced building technology, with the goal being to educate both consumers and builders that "green" construction can lend itself to even the most designer custom homes. The home is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2001.
