When winter comes to Regina, Saskatchewan, though the snow-covered landscape is beautiful to look at, the perpetually freezing conditions below 0°C are an everyday challenge for construction professionals. Ingenuity reigns supreme when work must continue in such extreme temperatures and profitability relies on timely completion of tasks. The completion of the Marian Chateau Seniors' Center is an example of success resulting from hard work, good planning and an installation of GYP-SPAN® Radiant by Elmhurst Gypsum Floors, Inc.
GYP-SPAN® Radiant is a cementitious floor underlayment designed to cover the hydronic tubes or electric cables in a radiant heating system. When installed over the heat source, it seals the room's perimeter and adheres to the tubes or cables without air bubbles, spreading heat evenly throughout the floor without hot spots. GYP-SPAN® Radiant dries without shrinkage cracks and provides a smooth, flat, energy efficient thermal mass on which finished floor goods can be easily attached.
Elmhurst Gypsum Floors, Inc., a Licensed Applicator of Hacker Floor Underlayments, installed 83,000 square feet of GYP-SPAN® Radiant in the 136-unit facility, assuring the residents and staff firm, flat, evenly heated floors that were put to use well before the building was finished.
Darrell Remai of P.R. Developments, LTD, the General Contractor and Owner of the Marian Chateau, commented on how GYP-SPAN® Radiant saved the project money before the structure was even completed. "We left the drywall off except for the exterior walls and used the GYP-SPAN® Radiant as a heating device during the balance of construction. Not only did this keep the floors from freezing, it eliminated our temporary heating costs during construction and saved us $25,000, which is what a project this size would run. This is the second project we have done with GYP-SPAN® Radiant and we are very pleased with the results."
