The city of Toledo, Ohio, and the many baseball fans residing there have something new to cheer about. Construction of Fifth Third Field, the new home of minor league baseball team, the Toledo Mud Hens, is now complete. Spanning a city block in downtown Toledo, the amenities of this state-of-the art baseball and entertainment complex rival those found at major league facilities around the country.

Construction on the new stadium complex did not start completely from scratch. One existing building dating back to the early 1900’s was slated for renovation into retail space and a gift shop. With six stories of original tongue and groove wood floors needing drastic repair, General Contractor AA Boos & Sons awarded Level-Tech Systems, Inc., a Licensed Applicator of Hacker Industries, Inc., the opportunity to provide a flooring solution with FIRM-FILL® High Strength gypsum concrete floor underlayment.

"The original floor was a unique, open web design that they wanted to keep," said Scott Heylock, owner of Level-Tech Systems. "We went in and installed FIRM-FILL® High Strength in three mobilizations, two floors per day. When we reached the sixth floor, the surface was so dilapidated that AA Boos & Sons put 3/4" square edge plywood down over it. We put Enkasonic sound control matting down as a reinforcing element, which also acted to seal the open edges in the floor, providing us with a tight surface to pour over with leakage protection."

Upon completion, 35,000 square feet of FIRM-FILL® High Strength created a floor underlayment solution exceeding all expectations. "Everyone raved about the surface hardness. After we poured the ground floor, the gypsum concrete was subject to extensive traffic, as it was ramped up directly to the new stadium and became a major supply route. It is unbelievable how well the surface held up through the entire construction process," said Heylock. "This product is very finishable and when sealed, it wears almost like hard rock concrete."
