The Purdue University Calumet Student Apartments isn't your typical student housing. The 384-bed student-housing complex combines apartment-style living with a quiet, comfortable environment designed to support the academic success of its residents.

To offer students at the University of Purdue Calumet an ideal environment for academic achievement, General Contractor, Gariup Construction, decided to use Hacker Industries, Inc.'s FIRM- FILL 3310 gypsum concrete floor underlayment. FIRM-FILL 3310 not only provides high compressive strengths for finished floor coverings, it also is an integral component of systems meeting IIC and STC sound requirements.

Indiana-based Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc., a Licensed Applicator of Hacker Floor Underlayments for over three years, was selected as the subcontractor to pour the 86,000 square-foot job based on their expertise and strong recommendations.

As with the installation of any Hacker Floor Underlayment, the subfloor must be cleaned and approved by the General Contractor. "Gariup did a great job preparing the surface and the building prior to the installation of the underlayment," said Mark Mulder, Operations Manager of Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. "The subfloors were free of debris and the building was enclosed, providing the optimum environment for pouring the underlayment. Our crew was able to pour right away, which kept the construction process on schedule."

Undertaking the high-profile job required Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. to pour one wing at a time, approx. 20,000 square feet per day. The experienced crew of Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. primed the wood subfloor and poured FIRM-FILL 3310 at 3/4 inch-thick. To ensure consistency of the material and meet Hacker's stringent quality control standards, psi slump tests were done every 10,000 square feet.

The main requirement of the General Contractor was to keep the construction on schedule in order to open the housing facility to new students by August 1,2005. "Advanced Flooring Systems, Inc. did a very good job of pouring the floors on this project. They helped us meet the building schedule by showing up on time and pouring what was scheduled without any problems. We are very happy with the product and Advanced Flooring Systems,” said Chris Staes, Project Superintendent, Gariup Construction.

Since its introduction in 2003, FIRM-FILL 3310 has set the bar in performance and reliability. The product offers compressive strengths up to 3300 psi and has over 83 UL listings, more than any competing product. And, unlike lightweight concrete, FIRM-FILL 3310 does not shrink or crack when it sets allowing for improved acoustical performance. In addition, it is designed to decrease the amount of water use, offering a quicker drying time without compromising the rock-solid floor strength.
